The combination of salty and sweet, there is something about it that makes it literally irresistible. It cures all of your cravings in one delicious bite, well for me at least it does. Hence why I decided to bake up a batch of they YUMMIEST Salted Dark Chocolate Chunk Oatmeal cookies. A juxtaposition of flavors these cookies have it all; sweet, salty and whole grains baked into delicious little addictive cookies.
Hands down in our household Chocolate Chip Cookies are by far the favorite. My hubby and kids can devour a whole batch in one day. Me, I like to save some of the dough in the refrigerator and snack on it when I get a sweet craving. I know a lot of you out there share my love of raw cookie dough, even if you are not supposed to eat it raw we take that chance because it is so DELICIOUS!
For those of you that have traveled to Phoenix and had the pleasure of eating at La Grande Orange, you know exactly what I am talking about. LGO as we in Phoenix like to call it, is a quaint little organic pastry bar, grocery and pizzeria in the Arcadia neighborhood of downtown Phoenix. They have literally the best bakery and the cookies, OMG their cookies are to die for. Not only are they the size of your hand they are dense and chewy with amazing flavors. I had the luxury of trying one of these cookies and was blown away by the flavors. I had never tried a cookie before that had flaked sea salt on top.
One bite, that was it, I was hooked and found myself nibbling on that delicious cookie for the rest of the day. Every time I passed it in the kitchen, I would justify just one more tiny bite. Until the whole cookies was GONE! Then you are standing there with that shocked look on your face like how did this just happen? Addicting I tell you!
With that delicious cookie on my mind, I wanted to recreate it, but since their recipes are under lock and key it, was a process of estimation and guessing. Starting with a basic chocolate chip cookie recipe, adding oats and flaked sea salt, you get something that is darn close!
Enjoy this cookie recipe my friends and try not to get addicted!
Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 sticks unsalted butter, at room temperature
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 12 ounces block dark chocolate, coarsely chopped (I used a Ghirardelli Dark Chocolate Bar)
- Large flake sea salt, for garnish (I use Maldon sea salt)
Directions:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
In a small mixing bowl, combine the dry ingredients: flour, oats, baking powder, cinnamon and salt.
In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the brown sugar, sugar and butter. Using the paddle attachment of the stand mixer, beat together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
Add the eggs one at a time and beat them into the butter and sugar mixture until incorporated. Then add in vanilla.
With the mixer on low, gradually add the flour mixture into the butter/sugar mixture. Mix until just combined. Fold in the dark chocolate chunks.
Using a 2 tbs cookie dough scoop, scoop cookie dough onto an ungreased cookie sheet. Place the cookie dough balls 2 inches apart on the cookie sheet.
Bake for 12 to 13 minutes.
When the cookies come out of the oven IMMEDIATELY sprinkle each cookie with a few grains of flaked sea salt. This is really important to do while the cookies are hot so the salt sticks to the dough.
Let the cookies cool for 2 to 3 minutes and then transfer them to a cooling rack.

I love oatmeal cookies. My husband’s favourite is nutella and oatmeal and second chocolate and oats 🙂 Salt and cinnamon would bring a nice twist!
I was wondering if I can replace the APF here with oats flour and make it a 100% oatmeal cookie? I have been looking for only oats cookie recipe but haven’t come across one yet..
Jillian says
Thanks Ashima! I have never tried baking with oat flour. It it is a one to one replacement ratio then I think it would work. Nutella and oatmeal cookies sound absolutely divine!!
