Kick up your St. Paddy’s Day a notch with this amazing Guinness Irish Soda bread. That’s right a bread made with beer and a simple quick bread at that! I could not as a food blogger let another St. Patrick’s Day go by without making an Irish Soda Bread recipe. I mean I am 25% Irish it would be a sacrilege not to!
Lately I have been researching family history, predominantly on my father’s side since, well, they just were not good at keeping records or family trees. After some digging, I have found out that my father’s family lineage hailed from County Cork near Waterford in Ireland. With my newfound Irish lineage, my love of Guinness and well bread I knew that this Guinness Irish Soda Bread recipe was a fantastic idea.
For those of you that think making bread is some long arduous task, it does not have to be. Enter the quick bread into your kitchen obsession file. A quick bread is any bread leavened with leavening agents other than yeast or eggs. Do you know what makes Irish soda bread so unique? It uses baking soda in lieu of yeast. The baking soda is what gives this bread such a unique flavor.
Traditional Irish Soda Bread contains currants or raisins, which I really do not care for in my breads. However, I do LOVE Irish Soda bread so ixnay on the dried fruit and add some creamy dreamy Guinness! This Guinness Irish Soda Bread is dense and chewy with a crunchy crust. It is perfect as is, or toasted with some butter and preserves. Serve this bread with soups, for breakfast, snacks, or anytime!
This bread is so super easy and quick you can make it last minute for your St. Patrick’s Day festivities!
Enjoy!
Ingredients:
- 4 Cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for kneading
- 4 Tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
- 4 Tablespoons (1/2 stick) cold butter, cut into 1/2 inch pieces (I used Kerrygold)
- 1 bottle Guinness stout
- 1 egg, lightly beaten
Directions:
Preheat the oven to 375 °F. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
Combine the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt in the bowl of an electric mixer. Beat with the dough hook attachment to combine. With the mixer running, add the butter, one piece at a time, and mix on low speed until combined.
With a fork, lightly beat the Guinness and egg together in a measuring cup. With the mixer running on low speed, slowly pour the beer and egg mixture into the flour. The dough will be very wet.
Place the dough onto a well-floured surface and knead it a few times into a round loaf, adding up to an additional half cup of flour to get the dough firm enough to mold. Place the loaf on the pan and lightly cut an X into the top of the bread with a serrated knife.
Bake for 50 to 55 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Tapping the loaf should result in a hollow sound.
Remove from baking sheet and cool bread on a baking rack. Serve warm or at room temperature.

This looks delicious! I actually baked a loaf of soda bread this past weekend, but with buttermilk. I love the idea of putting Guinness in instead!
